Frankie Aleen, a Doberman-shifter, has lived her life in and out of both foster homes and animal shelters. Without a mentor to guide her through the trials of shapeshifting, she was left to struggle to find balance between that of human and dog. Five years ago, though, she ran away from Chicago and ended up in the quaint town of Woodland Creek, Indiana, at the age of seventeen and finally found a safe harbor. An owl-shifter, Otis Brock, took her in and has been a father figure to her ever since.

Even though Frankie, now a bartender, has a wild, rebellious streak, she feels obligated to seek out other abandoned shifters to provide mentorship of her own. Frankie’s safe haven is threatened, however, when teen shifters start turning up dead around Woodland Pond, and she makes it her mission to find the perpetrator and seek justice.

But when one of Woodland Creek PD’s finest, Detective Gunnar Mason, starts sniffing around, he begins to notice that each of the deceased teens are somehow linked to that of the sexy, mysterious bartender with a sharp tongue. He doesn’t want her out of his sight until he’s sure she’s not responsible for the deaths that are stacking up. Things aren’t what they seem in Woodland Creek and he’s sure that Frankie is harboring a dark secret—a secret that may be the key to solving the entire case.

Will Frankie become distracted from her quest for justice by the handsome detective that seems immune to her powers of intimidation? What will happen when Gunnar discovers secrets that weren’t ever meant to be uncovered by humans?

Amazon Review

I was intrigued by Running Free from the first time I heard what the story would be about. I’m no stranger to shifter stories, but this is the first I’ve ever read with a Doberman shifter. That alone made me want to read the story along with it being by K Webster…I can’t ever pass up one of her books. Running Free was no exception. It was K Webster from beginning to the end, which means amazing!

In Running Free, the main female character, Frankie Aleen, is a Doberman shifter who has had a very hard life. Whether she was in a foster home or an animal shelter, she struggled greatly. Having no mentor to help her through the trials of shifting, she had to figure it out all on her own. Needless to say, Frankie doesn’t trust anyone, especially Woodland Creek’s detective, Gunnar Mason. Gunnar is working on a case where teens are being killed and they all seemed to have one common denominator: Frankie. Detective Mason is determined to figure out the connection as well as his intense attraction to Frankie as well. Of course, Frankie fights it, but it’s soon apparent that the chemistry between them is off the charts. Can they work together? Will Gunnar run when he figures out what Frankie really is? One click and find out…you won’t be sorry. If you are a K Webster fan, then you already know how great this book is, if she is new to you, then get ready for an awesome ride!

On the technical side, Running Free is a story full of suspense, romance, sexy times…you know the trifecta! 🙂 Ms. Webster does a fantastic job of keeping you interested from beginning to end. She makes you like her characters or at the very least you become invested in them. In my case, I was cheering Gunnar and Frankie on to their HEA as well as to figuring out the case.

Also, Kristi knows how to write a book boyfriend that makes you want to steal him away from the heroine. For example, “When all this blows over, I don’t care what kind of animal you are…you’re still mine and I love you.” How could you not love this guy?

Finally, I love that this was not the traditional shifter story. I didn’t put it down from the time I picked it up until the end. I give Running Free 5 very highly recommended starts. All of the Woodland Creek series is amazing, but this story is one of my favorites. One click it and see what I’m talking about. Congratulations K Webster…another fabulous story…you’ve got me completely addicted to your work 🙂
